A note on decoupled jump conditions for Navier-Stokes flows with discontinuous viscosity across an incompressible membrane

چکیده
The membrane of biological cells consists of tightly packed lipid molecules with hydrophilic heads facing the exterior and interior fluids and hydrophobic tails hiding in the middle, forming a bilayer structure. Most cell membranes (and other biological membranes) can deform but resist area dilation and are often modelled as incompressible fluid interfaces [12]. The aqueous solution outside the cell and the cellular material enclosed by the membrane can also be treated as incompressible fluids with a discontinuous viscosity (more viscous inside the cells).

The Three-dimensional Jump Conditions for the Stokes Equations with Discontinuous Viscosity, Singular Forces, and an Incompressible Interface
The three-dimensional jump conditions for the pressure and velocity fields, up to the second normal derivative, across an incompressible/inextensible interface in the Stokes regime are derived herein. The fluid viscosity is only piecewise continuous in the domain while the embedded interface exerts singular forces on the surround fluids. This gives rise to discontinuous solutions in the pressur...
متن کاملAn immersed interface method for solving incompressible viscous flows with piecewise constant viscosity across a moving elastic membrane
This paper presents an implementation of the second-order accurate immersed interface method to simulate the motion of the flexible elastic membrane immersed in two viscous incompressible fluids with different viscosities, which further develops the work reported in Tan et al. [Z.-J. Tan, D.V. Le, K.M. Lim, B.C. Khoo, An Immersed Interface Method for the Incompressible Navier–Stokes Equations w...
متن کاملAn Immersed Interface Method for the Incompressible Navier--Stokes Equations with Discontinuous Viscosity Across the Interface
We present an immersed interface method for solving the incompressible Navier– Stokes equations with discontinuous viscosity across the interface and singular forces. The method is based on the augmented strategy proposed by Li, Ito, and Lai [Comput. Fluids, 36 (2007), pp. 622–635] to decouple the jump conditions of the fluid variables through the introduction of two augmented variables. In the...
متن کاملNumerical Methods and Simulation Techniques for Flow with Shear and Pressure dependent Viscosity
In this note we present some of our recent results concerning flows with pressure and shear dependent viscosity. From the numerical point of view several problems arise, first from the difficulty of approximating incompressible velocity fields and, second, from poor conditioning and possible lack of differentiability of the involved nonlinear functions due to the material laws. The lack of diff...
متن کاملA Splitting Method Using Discontinuous Galerkin for the Transient Incompressible Navier-stokes Equations
In this paper we solve the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations by splitting the non-linearity and incompressibility, and using discontinuous or continuous finite element methods in space. We prove optimal error estimates for the velocity and suboptimal estimates for the pressure. We present some numerical experiments. Mathematics Subject Classification. 65M12, 65M15, 65M60. Re...
